AEO Glossary
Plain-language definitions for the concepts we use in Answer Engine Optimization, AI-driven search, structured data, and trust/UX. Bookmark this if you're rolling AEO into your workflow.
A
- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
-
Optimising your content so AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI answers, etc.)
can extract, summarise, and cite you directly. AEO is about clarity, structure, and factual authority —
not just “ranking as a blue link”.
Get an AEO Readiness Review → - AEO Readiness Review
-
Our structured assessment of a site’s AI visibility and trust signals. We analyse schema coverage,
entity consistency, answer-first clarity, and crawl accessibility, then give you a prioritised roadmap.
Request yours → - AEO Audit Analyzer
-
A tool that runs quick AI-readiness checks across key URLs, looking at schema presence,
answer-first content, and trust markers. Used to identify fast wins.
Open AEO Audit Analyzer → - AI Answer Engine
- A system that returns natural-language answers instead of (or before) a list of links. Examples include Perplexity and certain AI-powered Google results. These engines extract facts, then try to attribute them.
- AI Visibility
-
How findable, quotable, and attributable your brand or URL is inside AI-generated answers.
If the assistant can confidently describe you (and credit you), your AI visibility is healthy.
Check visibility → - Answer-First Content
-
A writing pattern where the page gives a direct, factual answer to the user’s core question
in the first 40–60 words, then expands. This makes extraction easy for AI assistants.
Try the Answer-First Rewriter → - Article Schema
-
JSON-LD describing an article: headline, author, dates. Helps AI understand who is saying what,
and whether it’s credible / current.
Generate Article schema →
B
- Brand Clarity
- How quickly a new visitor (or an AI system) can tell who you are, what you offer, and who it’s for. Weak brand clarity reduces trust, reduces citation, and hurts conversion.
C
- Canonical URL
-
The preferred URL for a given piece of content. Marked with
<link rel="canonical">, it tells crawlers which version should be treated as the “official” one. - Color Contrast
-
The visual difference between text colour and background colour.
Poor contrast = low trust, low readability, and potential accessibility issues.
Check contrast → - Content Extractability
- How easily a machine can lift a clean, standalone answer from your page. Wall-of-text marketing copy is low extractability. Short, factual paragraphs are high extractability.
D
- Defined Entity
- A person, organisation, product, service, location, or concept described in a way that's specific enough to be recognised and reused elsewhere. Strong defined entities help AI systems understand who did what.
E
- Entity
- A uniquely identifiable “thing” — a company, a product, a person, a topic. AEO is largely about getting your entities described consistently, everywhere.
- Entity Map
- A relationship map of everything that matters to your brand: you, your product lines, your founder(s), your approach, your service areas, and how they connect. This informs internal linking and Organization schema.
- Extraction
- The act of an AI assistant taking a fact, figure, or explanation from your page and using it in its generated answer. AEO makes those extracts precise and attributable.
F
- FAQPage Schema
-
Structured data for Q&A blocks. Each question/answer pair is marked in JSON-LD so search and AI can lift
exact wording. Often used to win FAQ-style coverage in AI answers.
Generate FAQPage schema → - First Meaningful Answer
- The first direct, standalone answer to the user’s main question on a page. This is often where large language models look first when deciding what you “claim”.
G
- Google SGE / AI Overviews
- Google’s AI-generated answer layer that attempts to summarise a query and give a direct response, sometimes with cited sources. This is one of the key surfaces AEO tries to influence.
I
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint)
-
A performance metric that measures how responsive a page feels to user input.
Slow INP makes your brand feel laggy or low quality.
Audit INP → - Internal Linking
- How your pages reference and pass authority to each other. In AEO, internal linking also teaches AI “these two topics are related”, which strengthens your entity map.
L
- Landing Page Trust Signals
-
Elements that prove you’re legitimate: address, phone, leadership names,
testimonials, scope of services. AI systems and humans both use these for credibility.

O
- Organization Schema
-
Structured data that describes your business: official name, URL, logo, contact info, service areas.
It helps AI systems tie your pages back to a known source (you).
Build Organization schema →
P
- Perplexity
- An AI-native answer engine: you ask a question, it gives you a narrative answer and often cites its sources. Strong AEO can increase your chance of being cited there.
- Performance Budget
-
A target for how “heavy” a page is allowed to be (JS, CSS, fonts, analytics).
Helps keep interaction snappy, which supports trust and conversion.
Audit resource weight →
R
- Rich Results
- Enhanced search results (FAQ panels, how-to steps, product attributes, etc.) that appear because of structured data. Many of the same signals that power rich results also feed AI answers.
- Resource Triage
-
Our performance view of which scripts, styles, and third-party tags are slowing you down —
plus which ones are genuinely critical to revenue.
Run Resource Triage →
S
- Schema / Schema Markup
-
A structured data vocabulary (commonly expressed in JSON-LD) that tells machines what’s on the page:
who authored it, what problem it solves, who it’s for.
Open Markup Builder → - Schema Validator+
-
Our validator that checks JSON-LD for validity and gaps in required / high-signal fields.
It’s designed for AEO use cases, not just “is this technically valid?”.
Try Schema Validator+ → - Sitewide Consistency
- Making sure your brand name, service description, pricing language, and contact details match everywhere — in content and in schema. Inconsistency is a trust leak.
- Snippetability
- How easily a sentence or paragraph from your page can be lifted and shown as a standalone quote. High snippetability = higher chances of AI citation.
U
- Units Converter
-
A quick utility for normalising measurements (px → rem, ms → s, etc.).
Helpful in technical audits and performance debugging.
Use Units Converter → - URL Scope
- The set of URLs you actually want to be known for. AEO work usually starts by defining which pages deserve to be cited, not just which pages exist.
